In the age of the Internet, anyone can discover a multitude of facts about our world. Still, there are facts that are hard to believe. For example, white bears are not white, and that mushrooms are more animals than plants.
We collected 10 real facts for you that you probably never thought about.
10. If You Fall Through The Earth, It Will Take You About 38 Minutes To Reach The Other Side
Physicists at McGill University in Montreal have calculated that it will take a person just 38 minutes and 11 seconds to reach the other side of the planet if they fall through a hole in the Earth.
The speed at which the person will fly will reach more than 5 miles per second. However, these scientists also suggest that humanity does not expect a real tunnel to appear in the near future.
9. When In An Unfamiliar Location, A Person Tends To Go To The Right, Rather Than To The Left
A psychology professor, Stephen Bitgood, says that in an area without direction, a right-handed person, who is 90% of the adult population, tends to go to the right.
This principle is actively used by merchants who place products on the shelves from left to right, starting with the cheapest and ending with the most expensive, therefore, foreseeing the trajectory of buyers.
8. A Train Was Invented 16 Years Earlier Than A Bicycle
The first Puffing Devil train was invented in 1801 by the English engineer Richard Trevithick, while the first bicycle prototype, the Laufmaschine two-wheeled device, was created in 1817 by the German professor, Baron Karl von Drais.
7. Rats Laugh When They’re Tickled
Scientists have discovered that rats are the only other mammals that can laugh while being tickled, just like humans.
However, rats only laugh if they are in a good mood. If they feel depressed or scared, the tickle reaction is noticeably weaker.
6. The Fur Of Polar Bears Is Not Actually White
In fact, polar bear hair has no pigment, it is semi-transparent. And their skin is black, which helps them stay warm because black absorbs sunlight better and speeds up the hair-drying process after bathing.
5. Most Fat Is Expelled From The Body Through Exhalation
An Australian physicist, Ruben Meerman, conducted a series of experiments and found that people exhale fat.
It showed that around 22 pounds of fat is converted into 18.5 pounds of carbon dioxide leaving the body in the form of exhaled air and we lose about 3.5 pounds in water (through urine, sweat, and tears).
4. Medical Workers In Great Britain Are Not Allowed To Wear Rings At Work
The hands of doctors and nurses should be ready to work at any time. But the space on the finger behind a ring can become contaminated and can be very difficult to remove.
Therefore, in order not to waste precious time when removing a ring, medical professionals are prohibited from wearing it. The only exception is religious decoration.
3. Not Only Humans Can Be Married
It’s not without reason why Erika Eiffel has this famous surname. No, she is not a descendant of Gustave Eiffel, she is … the wife of the Eiffel Tower.
In 2007, she officially registered her marriage to this famous landmark in Paris.
She had a very long relationship with a bow named Lance before the tower. By the way, Erika Eiffel is not the only person who has strong feelings for objects.
2. Fungi In Their Structure Are More Like Animals Than Plants
We all remember the school that fungi are a separate kingdom in the plant world. But molecular genetic studies have shown that although fungi are classified separately from animals, their cellular structure is closer to the kingdom of animals than it is to plants.
1. While Pyramids Were Being Built, Mammoths Were Roaming The Planet
Although woolly mammoths are believed to have died completely in the late Pleistocene, some of them managed to survive on the remote and isolated island of Wrangel.
They lived there until about 4000 years ago, several centuries after the construction of the Giza pyramid.
Scientists believe that this small island has drifted away from the mainland carrying a small group of these giants, having saved its population for a long period of time.
