We bet that it is not common to find left-handed people, since only about 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. And this quality sure comes with some surprising facts! Still, the main question is why this happens.
We want to share with you the unexpected reasons for this “anomaly” and what advantages it gives the people who have it.
Why Do Some People Become Left-handed?
Baby’s Birth Position Can Affect Which Hand They Use
It was found that the position of the baby in the last trimester and its position at birth can affect which hand will be dominant.
Asymmetric placing, when the head is turned to the side most of the time, creates asymmetric stimulation of the vestibular system that leads to reducing right-handedness.
Hormone Exposure
Four studies revealed that people whose mothers took synthetic estrogen-based drugs were more likely to be left-handed than others.
This drug was used between 1940 and 1971. The researchers concluded that estrogen affects the developing brain, including left dominance.
Human Evolution
The more social the animal, the more the general population will lean to one side. As a result, we have a right-handed majority.
However, laterality is partly genetic and partly environmental. This was shown after studying identical twins, who have the same genes, but not always the same dexterity.
Advantages Of Lefties
Here are some surprising advantages lefties have. If your friend or family member is left-handed, you can make them happy by sharing this with them:
Left-handed People Are Better Drivers
It’s not just gossip, but a study confirmed that left-handers were less likely to cause accidents than right-handed drivers. Also, lefties can learn to drive faster and more successfully.
Better Memory
Lefties, or at least family members of lefties, can remember events better! 62 subjects were invited to view a series of 55 words on the computer screen and then write them down.
People who were left-handed in their families outnumbered others in this task.
Out-of-the-box Thinking
Left-handed people can take a totally different approach when it comes to solving problems. This is especially good for creative fields.
This may be related to the fact that right-handed people tend to judge objects on the right side as positive and those on the left side as negative, while left-handed people do the opposite.
Lefties Are Better Athletes
Left-handed men and women can be good at sports like baseball, cricket, table tennis, and other games where players must react quickly.
The ability to maintain control on the other hand makes it possible to be better in your playing space.
