Relationship experts agree that the key to a lasting relationship is open and honest communication. But a 2021 survey by a UK e-commerce website showed that the food a couple eats on their first date can determine whether or not their relationship ends in divorce.

Based on this study, we have made a list of the types of cuisine you should avoid on your first date with a potential partner. Flip the card over to find the divorce rate and average length of marriage resulting from each type of food.

#1. Bar Food

The divorce rate among respondents who had this on their first date: 43%

Average marriage length: 7 years

#2. Caribbean Food

The divorce rate among respondents who had this on their first date: 44%

Average marriage length: 6 years

#3. Japanese Food

The divorce rate among respondents who had this on their first date: 47%

Average marriage length: 3 years and 9 months

#4. Portuguese Food

The divorce rate among respondents who had this on their first date: 50%

Average marriage length: 2 years and 5 months

#5. Buffet

The divorce rate among respondents who had this on their first date: 53%

Average marriage length: 1 year and 4 months

#6. Chinese Food

The divorce rate among respondents who had this on their first date: 55%

Average marriage length: 2 years

According to the same study, Italian, French, and Mediterranean cuisines proved to be the safest bets for a first-date meal to ensure a long-lasting marriage.

But of course, as this study was not conducted by a proper scientific institution, it is best to take it with a grain of salt. Ultimately, what matters more than the actual food is how well the couple enjoys each other’s company on the first date.
