The University of the People (UoPeople) is a non-profit private, distance education university. University of the People was launched by educational entrepreneur Shai Reshef in January 2009. Although the university has no campus due to its online distance learning nature, it uses a shared office in California as an office of admission.
The first UoPeople students began classes in September 2009, studying for associate and bachelor’s degrees in business administration and computer science. At that time, the school had no accreditation and did not charge any fees or tuition.
In February 2014 UoPeople received accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a recognized accrediting agency.
The Distance Education Accrediting Commission is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). In addition, UoPeople has been recognized as a Candidate for Accreditation by WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). For more details, see our Accreditation page.

How To Apply UoPeople’s
UoPeople’s online application is easy, quick, and simple. With a few short steps and by providing basic information, you can begin the journey to your new future.
In the UoPeople Admissions Application, you will be asked to provide:
Basic information such as name, address, and date of birth.
Education history information, such as high school or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) name, location, and completion dates. If you are an Undergraduate applicant and unable to provide this, click here.
English proficiency–completion and score, if relevant.
One-time non-refundable Application Fee.
To start, apply on our website at uopeople.edu and provide us with some basic information about what degree you want to study and your current level of education. You will then be directed to our payment page where you can pay the $60 application fee. This minimal cost helps us continue our mission to provide a tuition-free, high-quality education for all. You will then get an email with login details to access the UoPeople portal.
